FAQ

THE PRODUCTION PROCESS

I have a song I want to record. What do I do next?

Assuming the song is complete, you would begin with a recording session. If needed, instrumentation can be provided for you by an in-house producer and/or session musicians. After that, other parts can be added in if you wish, such as additional instruments or vocals. If your song is not complete or needs refinement, we offer songwriting coaching. Your needs can be discussed during the consultation.

What is involved in the recording process?

All recording begins with either "takes" or "tracking," which refers to recording all of the sounds together for your production versus individual sounds one at a time. After that, the recordings are edited and mixed to create a final produced sound and then is exported to a common music file (wav, mp3) which is also known as a "master" which is used to distribute.

What is the difference between an engineer and a producer?

Basically, an engineer focuses on the technical elements of recording (mics, gear, etc.) A producer's focus is the artistic direction and development of the production itself.

Having access to a producer who can also skillfully provide engineering services ensures a streamlined process by combining creative direction with technical expertise. However, if you prefer to focus solely on the engineering aspects of your project, that's completely up to you and we can tailor our services accordingly.

What music genres and types of audio do you record?

While we have extensive experience working across most genres of music, our boutique studio offers a more intimate and focused environment. The Blue Studio is best suited for individuals and smaller groups, ensuring a tailored experience for every project.

We also record podcasts, audiobooks, voiceovers, audio for film/video.

Can you create music for lyrics I have written?

Yes, music can be written for your lyrics or melody in any genre.

Can I have my project’s working file?

Yes. However, that does not guarantee that you will be able to utilize it without plug-ins specific to our studio’s computer. What is instead recommended is to offer you the stems of the recording.

How will I receive my music?

We highly recommend using Dropbox for file delivery. Alternatively, you can provide a hard drive or flash drive for transfer. If needed, files can be sent via email or text. Please note that physical media (e.g., CDs, cassettes) are available for an additional fee.

TRAINING AND COACHING

What is involved in production training?

You will learn how to do full production, typically using your own project. There are also opportunities to intern on others' projects. Training is personalized to your learning style and needs.

What is involved in songwriting coaching?

Songwriting coaching begins with a meeting where you will review and discuss your song with the producer. This allows the producer to understand your creative vision and assess your specific needs, so we can tailor the coaching to help you grow as a songwriter.
